Periodontal disease – causes and treatment
When you say gum disease, it’s not something many people recognize or know of. People do recognize cold or flu as a common disease but little do they know that gum disease is just as common as the usual cold that in fact, it currently infects about half of the American adult population. The reason why it’s not too recognized by people is because it doesn’t display symptoms that much except in its severe conditions.
Gum disease almost always starts with gingivitis – and it’s the time when the symptoms are mild therefore not very noticeable. Gingivitis often exhibits one or more of the following symptoms: bleeding gums or gums that easily bleed when brushing or touched, swollen, painful and discolored gums, and bad breath. When tartar is left alone, it will start to infect other parts of the teeth and gums which will cause tooth decay and gum disease.
At this point, it is really recommended to get the help of a dentist to ensure it gets treated as soon as possible otherwise the infection could start spreading to other parts of the mouth. Periodontal disease treatment depends on the severity of the disease – during its initial stages, you can use natural remedies to establish a steady healing process that is inexpensive and has little side effects but if the infection is severe, one must seek dental assistance immediately.
Regardless if you think that you have gum disease or not, it is very much recommended to visit your dentist once every 6 months to ensure you have a healthy and disease-free dental health. Although periodontal disease treatment is important, it is better if one doesn’t have to go through it through prevention. So ensure to brush your teeth and floss regularly, and while you’re at it, make sure to observe a proper diet – avoid starchy foods as keeping a healthy diet plays a very important role in one’s dental health.
